Tebelopele College

Tebelopele has since 2008 trained health care professionals on different aspects of HIV service delivery, supplying the Government, private sector and civil society with over 70% of HTC service providers (counsellors; lay counsellors and peer educators). In an effort to ensure sustained growth and a career path for providers, Tebelopele has continued to provide education beyond basic certificate levels; it is currently in the process of formalizing accreditation with Tertiary Education Council for its Diploma Course in HIV and AIDS Counselling. Work is also underway to strengthen this course and other counselling courses for recognition by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Ministry of Health (MoH) and Botswana Counselling Association (BCA).

Tebelopele embraces an evidence based approach to its training programming. Moreover, it has developed targeted training curricula to respond to vulnerable groups. Tebelopele has built capacity of peer educators to support Most at Risk Populations (MARPS) project which was scaled up in Kasane targeting female sex workers and their clients. In partnership with MoH, Tebelopele has developed Counsellor Supervision curricula, participant and trainers manuals for couples and the discordant couple’s manual.

Courses Offered

The following two training program are currently offered by Tebelopele training institute;

Advanced Certificate in Counselling and Testing (HCT)

This course is designed to equip trainees with the basics of counselling and testing. It comprises of 3 phases:

  1. 3 weeks of classroom learning,
  2. followed by 6 weeks of practicum and
  3. 1 week of de-briefing and examination.

HIV Rapid Testing- (Serial Testing)

This is one week training program designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of learners on HIV Testing using the latest testing algorithm. Prospective learners are admitted basing on the following criteria

Regulatory Compliance

Tebelopele Training Institute is registered an accredited by Botswana Qualification Authority. (BQA) All training staff are all also accredited and registered by BQA in areas of assessment, moderation as well as training. Tebelopele training centre located at Gaborone Secondary School grounds is fully registered and accredited by BQA. Plans are at an advanced stage to have another centre to in Francistown to cater for customers in the North.

Policy Statement

It is the policy of Tebelopele training institute to ensure the training is accessible on equal bases for all students without discrimination on the basis of race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, marital status, citizenship or any other characteristic protected by law.

Policy Guidelines

A “student” of Tebelopele training institute is a person who is attending or has enrolled for training. “students” may include attachment students, short term course participants or long term course participants and other employed by associated companies and seconded to the Tebelopele Training Institute and are subject to the control and direction of Tebelopele Training Institute in the performance of their duties.

Tebelopele training institute is committed to providing equality of opportunity to all students and applicants for full time and short courses. Access to training opportunities will not be affected by gender, sexual preference, marital status, disability, religion, culture, racial origins, political preference, pregnancy or age except in programs addressing specific recognized disadvantaged target groups.

Objectives and Strategies

Tebelopele Training Institute is committed to achieving the following Access and Equity objectives and strategies.

  • To ensure the broadest possible field of applicants for students places is reached by targeted advertising and stressing that training modules are available to all suitably qualified applicants.

  • To regularly review all Tebelopele Training Institute students’ policies, literature, publicity and training material to ensure it is non-discriminatory.
  • To encourage students from target groups to assume non-stereotyped roles within Tebelopele Training Institute.
  • To encourage the inclusion in courses of segments which raise awareness of the role, status, employment opportunities and progression within Tebelopele Training Institute.

Access & Equity

The concept of access implies that anyone who is eligible to apply to be a learner at Tebelopele Training Institute should face no barriers to acceptance in comparison with other eligible applicants for as long as they are students of Tebelopele Training Institute.

Equity implies that all eligible applicants receive an equitable and appropriate outcome. Equity also implies that if any sector of the population is not receiving a fair proportion of resources (under representation), it is not being equitably treated and requires specific targeting.

Access and equity also means the absence of harassment at Tebelopele Training Institute. Unlawful harassment can be based on any of the prohibited grounds of discrimination. Harassment is any form of behaviour that is unwelcome, which is based on one of the prohibited grounds, and which offends, humiliates or intimidates someone

Curriculum Development and Renewal

Curriculum development and renewal of Tebelopele is guided by existing needs and emerging issues. Our curriculum will provide definitions, rationale, and process requirements to comply with The Group policies. The curriculum is maintained by the Training and Resource Coordinators.

Training Staff Expertise

The training institute has five (5) qualified staff. The Trainers have been doing trainings for more than ten years. They also specialize in teaching different modules looking at the qualifications they have. These trainers also offer counselling so that they don’t lose grasp of their counselling skills and what is happening in the counselling field. The trainers train in areas such as counsellor supervision advanced counselling, rape and trauma, peer education, quality assurance and quality improvement etc.

The trainers use the experiential model of training. It adopts the latest in adult learning techniques. Self-analysis and self-awareness plus a client centred focus of training makes our trainings highly sought after. The trainers have accumulated a wealth of experience and the observed practice phase of our training courses is highly valued by our trainees as they practice before they finish the course.

Intense pressure has come to bear upon the format and structure of our current trainings. Tebelopele develop tailored trainings to take into account the changes and progress in HIV. There is no training house in Botswana which has a comprehensive VCT curriculum. The institute has responded to these concerns together with feedback from trainers and trainees by developing a new curriculum that borrows the best from the old but incorporates evidence-based approaches.

Community Mobilization

It equips participants with skills to mobilise communities to access HIV prevention, care and treatment services.
Post Rape Care Trauma
Designed for practicing counsellors develop skills to effectively provide trauma counselling.
Peer Education
This is designed for peers at workplace or youth groups. It equips participants with skills and knowledge on peer counselling support for effective HIV/AIDS awareness creation and support to workmates and peers on issues of HIV and AIDS.
Quality Assurance and Quality Implementation
This program is designed for counsellors to ensure adherence to issues of quality.
Refresher courses
These are tailor made to suit the client’s needs. They cater for accommodating new trends and information in HIV/AIDS issues.
